Carl Georg Hasenpflug besuchte für einen kurzen Zeitraum die Kunstakademie in Berlin und reiste anschließend, um sich künstlerisch weiterzubilden. Bekannt ist er besonders für seine architektonischen Darstellungen, vorwiegend von gotischen Sakralbauten, "... die jedoch nie authentische Abbildungen darstellten, sondern eine Symbiose zwischen der Phantasie des Malers und des inspirierenden Vorbilds" (Paffrath). Für dieses Gemälde diente ihm das Zisterzienserkloster in Walkenried am Rande des Südharzes zur Inspiration.
