Sophie Theodore war die Tochter von Johann Wolfart Graf Holland-Brederode (1599 - 1655) aus erster Ehe mit Johanna Nassau-Siegen (1594 - 1636). Die Brederodes gehörten zu den bedeutendsten niederländischen Adelsgeschlechtern. Im Mittelalter waren sie das vornehmste Adelsgeschlecht ganz Hollands gewesen. Christian (Inv.-Nr. 1) und Sophie sind in ähnlicher Weise gemalt, in der Größe sind beide Porträts fast identisch. Die Gemälde der Eheleute bilden ein Doppelporträt, eine beliebte Bildnisform in der niederländischen Malerei jener Zeit.
