König Maximilian von Bayern (1811-1864) wird im Brustausschnitt vor braunem Hintergrund gezeigt, im Dreiviertelprofil von links gesehen. Die Bekleidung in schwarzer Anzugjacke über einem weißen Hemd mit schwarzer Krawatte erscheint auf den ersten Blick schlicht, die Materialien sind jedoch edel. Das Porträt zeigt große Ähnlichkeit zu einer Fotografie, die der Münchner Fotograf Franz Hanfstaengel 1859 von dem König gemacht hatte. Die Wahrscheinlichkeit liegt sehr nahe, dass Franz Seraph Stirnbrand nach dieser Vorlage gearbeitet hat.
