Der russische Thronfolger Paul I. (reg. 1796-1801) heiratete 1776 in Sankt Petersburg die knapp siebzehnjährige Sophie Dorothee von Württemberg. Das Gemälde entstand im Jahr ihrer Hochzeit. Das Paar hatte zehn Kinder und steht bis heute für die enge dynastische Verbindung zwischen dem Hause Württemberg und dem russischen Haus der Romanows. [Maaike van Rijn]
