Der russische Thronfolger Paul I. (reg. 1796-1801) heiratete 1776 in Sankt Petersburg die knapp siebzehnjährige Sophie Dorothee von Württemberg. Vor ihrer Vermählung trat Sophie Dorothee vom lutherischen zum orthodoxen Glauben über, nahm den Namen Maria Fjodorowna an und wurde Großfürstin von Russland. Das Paar hatte zehn Kinder und steht bis heute für die enge dynastische Verbindung zwischen dem Hause Württemberg und dem russischen Haus der Romanows. Das Gemälde wurde aus Lotto-Mitteln erworben. Es ist im Alten Schloss ausgestellt.
