Die Dargestellte, Mathilde Emma Alenfeld, geb. Beyfuß (1829-1903), ist sitzend im Dreiviertelporträt in einem hochgeschlossenen Kleid dargestellt. Das am Kragen getragene Verdienstkreuz für Frauen und Jungfrauen mit Schleife weist sie als Krankenpflegerin im Deutsch-Französischen Krieg 1870/71 aus. Ihr Ehemann, Julius Alenfeld, (1820-1882), war Bankier in Magdeburg. Ihre Tochter Emma (1854-1918) war in zweiter Ehe (ab 1882) mit dem Berliner Kunsthistoriker Robert Dohme (1845-1893) verheiratet und führte nach dessen Tod den gemeinsamen Salon weiter.
