Das griechische Wort Äon ist ein schillernder Begriff. Als Titel des Ackermann’schen Gemäldes könnte man die Äonen vielleicht mit Welt-, Zeit, oder Lebenaltern gleichsetzten. Die sphärenhaft musikalische Anmutung der abstrakten Formen ist typisch für Max Ackermanns Kunst der 1950er Jahre. Während der Zeit des Nationalsozialismus mit Ausstellungsverbot belegt, pendelte Max Ackermann nach dem Krieg zwischen seinem Wohnsitz am Bodensee und Stuttgart bis er sich ab 1957 endgültig in Stuttgart niederließ, ein Jahr nachdem das "Äonen"-Gemälde entstanden ist.
