1832 verbrachte Delacroix sechs Monate in Marokko. Beeindruckt von der arabischen Kultur schrieb er kurz nach seiner Ankunft: „Die Antike bietet nichts Schöneres“. Mehrere Jahre nach der Reise entstand dieses Bild. Es ist eine klassisch komponierte Landschaft: Im Vordergrund beleben einzelne Figuren die Szene, hinter ihnen leitet ein hoher Baum unseren Blick in die weite Landschaft. Für das Gemälde nutzte Delacroix seine Erinnerung und Studien aus Marokko. Dabei flossen für den Baum und die Ansicht des Himmels wohl auch Versatzstücke aus französischen Landschaften ein.
