Das um 1730 entstandene lebensgroße Porträt Kaiser Karls VI. (1685-1740) wird traditionell dem kaiserlichen Hof- bzw. Kammermaler Johann Gottfried Auerbach zugeschrieben. Die Darstellung in vollem Harnisch, mit Kommandostab und Ordenszier entspricht dem gängigen Kanon barocker Herrscherbildnisse. Das Gemälde zählte, ebenso wie sein Gegenstück, das Porträt der Kaiserin Elisabeth Christine, ursprünglich zur Ausstattung des Weißen Saals im 1950 gesprengten Berliner Schloss. König Wilhelm von Preußen, der spätere Kaiser Wilhelm I., ließ es 1869/70 von Berlin nach Schloss Bad Homburg überführen, wo es bis heute das repräsentative Treppenhaus des Königsflügels schmückt.
