Die Ölstudie zeigt denselben Wasserfall bei Subiaco, den auch Johann Martin von Rohden (Inv. Nr. 1052-1972/1) in seinem Gemälde wiedergibt. Nerlys Skizze ist vermutlich vor Ort entstanden. Die frische Gischt des Wassers und das Licht auf den Felsen hat er mit schnellem, lebendigem Pinselstrich festgehalten. Dagegen malte von Rohden seine Komposition langsam im Atelier. Wie er hat auch Nerly das Kloster in Öl dargestellt. In einer Zeichnung vereinte er Gebäude und Wasserfall zu einer ähnlichen Komposition wie von Rohden. Das Motiv war bei Künstlern der Romantik sehr beliebt. Dorothee Hansen
