Huet, ein enger Freund von Eugène Delacroix, war der bedeutendste Landschaftsmaler der französischen Romantik. Dramatisch inszeniert er hier einen mächtigen Baum und setzt das Dunkel des Waldes gegen den blauen Himmel und die gelblichen Gewitterwolken. Die Natur ist bei ihm ein Spiegel der Seele: Es geht ihm nicht um realistische Wiedergabe, sondern darum, ihre urtümliche, bisweilen auch unheimliche Kraft zu vermitteln. Die Grundlage für Huets Gemälde bildeten Freilichtstudien. Seit der Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts malte er auch im Wald von Fontainebleau und pflegte Kontakt zu vielen Künstlern von Barbizon.
