Denis interessierte sich besonders für das heidnisch anmutende christliche Brauchtum in der Bretagne. Hier stellt er das alljährlich am 24. Juni entzündete Johannisfeuer dar. Die Studie bereitete ein größeres Gemälde vor, das sich heute im Museum in Pont-Aven befindet. Anstatt die Figuren mit Linien zu umreißen legte der Künstler die Konturen durch Freilassen des hellen Grundes fest.
