Mit dieser Ölstudie bereitete Vernet sein Gemälde Mazeppa und die Wölfe vor, das mit großem Erfolg im Pariser Salon gezeigt wurde und sich heute im Musée Calvet in Avignon befindet. Thema ist eine Dichtung von Lord Byron. Sie handelt von dem Hofpagen Mazeppa, der zur Strafe für seinen Ehebruch von einem Adeligen für einen quälenden Todesritt nackt auf ein wildes Pferd gebunden wird. Der Stoff hatte viele romantische Künstler inspiriert – unter ihnen bereits Eugène Delacroix und Théodore Géricault. Vernets Skizze gibt mit ihren breiten Pinselstrichen das temporeiche Bildthema besonders lebendig wieder. Mara-Lisa Kinne
