„Ecce homo! – Sehet, welch ein Mensch!“ Mit dieser Aufforderung zum Hinschauen hatte der römische Statthalter Pontius Pilatus Jesus vor das Volk geführt, das dessen Kreuzigung forderte. In Delacroix’ Bild lenken der Soldat und der Junge durch Zeigen und Blicke unsere Aufmerksamkeit auf Jesus. Das kleinformatige Gemälde, das Delacroix der Miniaturmalerin Jeanne Mathilde Herbelin schenkte, eignete sich dadurch besonders für die religiöse Andacht. Formal greift Delacroix Bildideen von Peter Paul Rubens auf, mit dem er sich als Künstler misst. Mara-Lisa Kinne
