Das kleinformatige Porträt zeigt Wilhelm I. von Württemberg (1781-1864) im Brustausschnitt. Franz Seraph Stirnbrand stellt ihn im Halbprofil von rechts gesehen vor einem roten Hintergrund dar, auf einem zinnoberfarbenen Lehnsessel sitzend. Trotz seines fortgeschrittenen Alters trägt der König eine Uniform, an die verschiedene Orden geheftet sind. Als Vorlage für das Gemälde diente Stirnbrand eine Fotografie, die Friedrich Brandseph 1859 von König Wilhelm I. gemacht hatte. Der Inschrift auf der Rückseite des Porträts zufolge vermachte der Künstler das Porträt 1881 August Wilhelm Freiherr von Taubenheim: "Von Stirnbrand für Seine Excellenz den Grafen von Taubenheim bestimmt, aus Verehrung für die Herzog Wilhelmsche Familie, d. 1. Juni 81."
