Die englische Prinzessin Charlotte Auguste Mathilde (1766-1828) heiratete am 18. Mai 1797 Herzog Friedrich von Württemberg. Er starb 1816, zwischenzeitlich durch Napoleon zum König erhoben. Die Haube und das schwarze Gewand, die Charlotte Mathilde in dem Porträt trägt, kennzeichnen sie als Witwe. Stirnbrand stellte sie in Halbfigur dar, auf einem Lehnstuhl sitzend, im Dreiviertelprofil von rechts gesehen. Das Gemälde existiert in mehrfacher Ausführung, rückseitig ist es signiert.
