Roslin var framför allt verksam i Paris och intog en särställning på den internationella konstscenen under 1700-talet. Det var i Paris han träffade sin blivande hustru, porträttmålaren Marie Suzanne Giroust, och det var där han råkade sin landsman Henrik Wilhelm Peill.
