Köksträdgården badar i solsken. Carl Larssons framställning av ljuset är så övertygande att man tycker sig dela flickans upplevelse av att bli bländad. Skuggorna i bilden är få. Det kan förklaras av att solen står högt, men konstnären har sannolikt valt att i stor utsträckning utelämna dem för att öka ljusets påtaglighet. Bilden är tillkommen i den internationella målarkolonin Grez-sur-Loing söder om Paris, där Larsson 1883–1884 utvecklade sin akvarellteknik under ljusförhållanden som skiljer sig från de svenska.
