Gauffier hade som lovande fransk historiemålare slagit sig ner i Italien, först i Rom och från 1793 i Florens. Med tiden tvingades han överge det prestigefyllda historiemåleriet, för att livnära sig som porträttmålare och genom att sälja landskap till Grand Tour-resenärer. I Florens avporträtterade han två svenska diplomater verksamma i staden – här Johan Claes Lagersvärd sittande framför en utsikt mot Domen. Gauffiers porträtt kännetecknas, liksom hans historiemålningar, av distinkta linjer och kyliga färger enligt tidens klassicerande ideal.
