Målningen skildrar myten om Venus födelse. Venus var kärlekens gudinna. Ur skummet som bildades efter en svallvåg steg hon enligt legenden ur havet. Havsnymfer förde henne till ön Cythere, varifrån hon allt sedan dess har regerat över kärlek, lust och passion bland gudar och människor. Konstnären François Bouchers tolkning från 1740 är dramatisk och mycket erotiskt laddad. Nakna tritoner (manliga havsnymfer) och najader (kvinnliga dito) skapar ett virrvarr av kroppar, vatten och fantasifulla fiskar.
