Lancrets specialitet var lekfulla scener där välklädda sällskap ur tidens samhällselit roade sig. Den här typen av motiv hade i början av 1700-talet lanserats av Watteau och gick under beteckningen fêtes galantes – galanta fester. Lancret hade varit elev till Watteau och förde traditionen vidare efter dennes död.
