Målningen beundrades av sin samtid som en skildring från en svunnen, välmående tid. Tionde var den skatt som uppbars av kyrkan och som motsvarade en tiondel av jordbrukets produktion. Nordenberg tillhörde Düsseldorfskolan som kännetecknades av dramatiserade naturskildringar och romantiskt historiemåleri. Men Nordenberg företog också många studieresor i Sverige och samlade material för att kunna göra korrekta avbilningar av allmogemiljöer.
