Enligt fornnordisk mytologi hörs blixt och dunder från himlen när asaguden Tor vredgas. Han far då fram i sin vagn, dragen av bockarna Tanngnjóstr och Tanngrisnir, i jakt på ondskan i form av jättar. I kampen mot dem svingar han sin hammare Mjölner och drar åt svångremmen på sitt kraftbälte Megingjord, vilket får hans styrka att växa. Psykologiskt sett är Tor rätt enkelt funtad, till skillnad från grubblaren Oden. Han dyrkades främst av bönder och trälar. I Mårten Eskil Winges tolkning är Tor stark, blond, beslutsam och orädd.
