Gustaf Cederström målade bilden av Karl XII:s likfärd i Paris 1877-78. Målningen är en fantasibild av hjältekungens transport hem till Sverige efter det ödesdigra skottet i Halden, i Norge 1718. För att komma en realistisk skildring så nära som möjligt målade Gustaf Cederström många skisser och studier utomhus. Han satte upp en bår, med en yrkesmodell, italienaren Raffaele Fusco, liggande ovanpå som fick föreställa Karl XII. Det finns flera små skisser i olja bevarade från 1877.
