Många av Renoirs kvinnoporträtt bör ses som skildringar av typer snarare än som porträtt av bestämda individer. Renoirs parisiska har också kallats La grisette – ett ord som betecknade kvinnor från arbetarklassen. Dessa unga kvinnor arbetade ofta som sömmerskor, tvätterskor eller butiksbiträden i städerna. De kvinnor som arbetade som konstnärsmodeller kom i regel också från arbetarklassen. Ordet grisette hade klang av lättsinne och fåfänga.
