Barye utförde en stor mängd djurskildringar i form av skulpturer, teckningar och målningar. Framförallt fascinerades han av exotiska djur – ett intresse han delade med Delacroix. De var till exempel båda flitiga besökare av det kringresande zoo som förevisades i Paris runt 1830, där den berömda tigern Atir kunde studeras på nära håll. Också i Baryes verk är kamp och dramatik ett återkommande motiv.
