Camille Pissarro bodde i Pontoise mellan 1866–1868 och 1872–1882 och skildrade den lilla staden med omgivningar i runt 300 målningar. Han hämtade motiv från småböndernas liv och arbete i det traditionella odlingslandskapet, men också från fabriksmiljöer, järnvägen och andra inslag i det moderna Frankrike. Bildens vårdag är målad i ljust gröna och gula nyanser med breda penseldrag och tjockt pålagd färg. Pontoise är idag en förort till Paris och ligger 30 km från stadens centrum.
