Målningen har ingen datering, men den är troligen utförd i Paris 1880–82. Den kvinnliga modellen bär drag av Gabrielle, fransyskan som Carl Larsson levde tillsammans med under åren omkring 1880. Det är nästan enda gången Carl Larsson återger ett motiv ur det samtida Parislivet. Kanske har han sneglat på kamraten Hugo Birgers målningar, där damer i modedräkter ofta förekommer, med eller utan uppvaktande kavaljerer.
