I samband med krigshändelserna 1870–1871 lämnade Monet Frankrike. Han begav sig tillsammans med sin hustru först till London och därifrån vidare till Holland. De tog in på ett hotell i Zaandam – en liten ort strax norr om Amsterdam. Under vistelsen där, från maj till oktober 1871, utförde Monet omkring 25 målningar. Bland dessa ingick en rad utsikter av floden Zaans mynning, dit den här målningen hör. Hösten 1871, när Pariskommunen slagits ner och den politiska situationen stabiliserats, återvände Monet till Frankrike.
