Porträttet visar Gustaf Mauritz Armfelt som svensk minister i Florens. Målningen utfördes 1793 – året efter mordet på Gustav III. Armfelt hade varit en av kungens nära förtrogna. Här sitter han tankfullt framför byster av Gustav III och Julius Ceasar – båda offer för mordiska komplotter. Genom anspelningen på den romerska antiken får porträttet en djupare mening och ett släktskap med det prestigefyllda historiemåleriet. Också möblerna bidrar till detta – han lutar sig tillbaka i en så kallad klismos-stol, kopierad efter antika förebilder och högsta mode vid tiden.
