Edelfelts lilla målning påminner oss om det handskrivna brevets och om skrivplatsens betydelse i det borgerliga hemmet. På bordet står bläckhornet i glas öppet och det verkar som om kvinnan besvarar ett brev hon just öppnat, mån om att inte låta avsändaren vänta. En tekniskt utsökt detalj i bilden är kuvertet hon håller i handen, eller närmare bestämt hur det genomlyses och blir transparent.
