Till sitt privata galleri ville paret Fürstenberg beställa en väggfast utsmyckning av Carl Larsson. Konstnären tog uppdraget mot att han fick utföra arbetet i Frankrike och att Fürstenbergs finansierade vistelsen. Allt resulterade i den berömda Fürstenbergska triptyken som visades vid världsutställningen i Paris 1889 och vann 1:a klassens medalj. Under arbetet med målningarna gjorde Larsson ett stort antal förberedande studier. Flera gav han till vänner, denna till skulptören Christian Eriksson.
