Bougival är beläget vid floden Seine, strax väster om Paris. På 1870-talet hämtade flera av impressionisterna motiv härifrån. Alfred Sisley var en av centralgestalterna i denna grupp. Den moderna tiden skymtar ständigt fram i dessa målningar – järnväg, fabriker och ångbåtar. Men i Sisleys målning från Bougival syns ingenting av dessa moderniteter, utom möjligen i en detalj – kvinnan i båten med sin gula hatt ger kanske en antydan om att trakten blivit ett populärt utflyktsmål för den nya tidens söndagsutflykter.
