Anna Boberg reste till Norge och Lofoten för första gången sommaren 1901. Upplevelsen av naturen, det speciella ljuset, norrskenet och midnattsolen gjorde ett oerhört intryck på konstnären. Hon återvände ett trettiotal gånger och lät uppföra ett vinternäste och ett sommarhus där. Anna Boberg hade en synnerligen rik produktion och har efterlämnat ett betydande antal målningar. I denna målning är titeln viktig – det som vid första anblicken förefaller vara midvinter är i själva verket en vårdag.
