Sommaren 1901 besökte Anna Boberg för första gången ögruppen Lofoten i nordvästra Norge. Fjällnaturen, norrskenet och midnattssolen gjorde ett oerhört intryck på henne. Hon återvände ett trettiotal gånger, sommar som vinter, för att måla under olika ljusförhållanden. I ett stort antal målningar och skisser, ofta på papp, har Boberg avbildat fiskelägen, fjällmassiv och atmosfäriska fenomen – som här i norrsken. Målningarna från Nordnorge fick negativ kritik i Sverige, men väckte positiv uppmärksamhet utomlands.
