Anna Boberg var djupt fascinerad av det arktiska landskapet. Från 1901 återvände hon år efter år till ögruppen Lofoten på Norges nordvästkust, där hon under ofta strapatsrika utflykter målade skisser i olja på papp. En sådan skiss har legat till grund för denna målning som skildrar sensommarnatten ovanför polcirkeln. Ljuset dröj-er sig kvar på himlen, och berg och stugor speglar sig i det helt blanka vattnet. Anna Bobergs Lofoten-målningar visades med framgång på utställningar i Europa och USA.
