Konstkritikern Émile Durand-Gréville (1838-1914) tillhörde inte de mest framstående skribenterna i 1800-talets Paris. Han lärde känna Degas på 1870-talet. Mycket lite är känt om deras relation. Degas skildrar Durand-Gréville en face – framifrån. Mycket tyder på att porträttet är en skiss då bakgrunden verkar långt ifrån slutförd och det är osignerat. Degas målade framförallt porträtt av familj, vänner, samtida författare, konstnärer och andra kulturpersonligheter. Porträtt utgör ungefär en femtedel av hans totala produktion.
