Helmer Osslund är bekant som de norrländska höstlandskapens målare. År 1910 utförde han utsikten över Ångermanälven från Storberget i Nordingrå. Målningen fick en guldmedalj då den ställdes ut på världsutställningen i San Francisco 1915. Osslund återkom senare till motivet och gjorde sammanlagt fem versioner, med olika tillägg och förändringar av färg och motiv. Endast den första versionen var utförd inför motivet – på åtta smörpappersark, senare överförda till duk.
