Fantasiporträttet av en antik poet utfördes vid hovet i Mantua som del av en serie om nio berömda poeter. Inspirerad av Caravaggio valde Fetti som sin modell en man av folket, avbildad utan idealisering och med en stark kroppslig närvarokänsla. Poeten porträtteras som en mogen man med väderbitet ansikte och ett inåtvänt uttryck. Hans nakna hjässa pryds av en lagerkrans, sedan antiken en utmärkelse förbehållen såväl segerherre som poet. Ljuset koncentreras till mannens känsligt modellerade ansikte och de kraftiga händerna. Fetti bjuder betraktaren en djupt mänsklig bild av den inspirerade poet…
