Karin Larsson drabbades på nyåret 1899 av en svår lunginflammation. När sjukdomen passerat sin kulmen avbildade den lättade maken konvalescenten. Här ligger hon till sängs i bostaden på Stora Glasbruksgatan i Stockholm. Motivet anknöt samtidigt till en etablerad tradition – under 1800-talet hade scener med kvinnor på sjukbädden blivit populära. Ämnet speglar också en tendens i tidens konst och litteratur att skildra kvinnor som spröda och ömtåliga, snarare än som starka och handlingskraftiga.
