Looström var chef för Nationalmuseum 1900–1915. Under den perioden utförde Larsson två stora målningar för museets trapphall. Vid tillkomsten av Gustav Vasas intåg i Stockholm (färdig 1908) framträdde Looström som en av konstnärens varma anhängare. När han några år därefter medverkade till refuserandet av Midvinterblot var det slut på vänskapen. Porträttet tillkom medan de ännu stod på god fot med varandra. Looström sitter här i sitt arbetsrum på museet, iklädd sin i samtiden omtalade runda rökmössa.
