Framgången med bilderna av den egna familjen gjorde att Carl Larsson blev eftersökt som barnporträttmålare. De beställningar han accepterade kom särskilt från föräldrar i en krets av högborgerliga, konstintresserade Stockholmsfamiljer. Ofta sade han nej, en gång till och med till en förfrågan från kungahuset. I det här fallet är flickan dotter till en amerikansk diplomat, stationerad i Stockholm. Hon är avbildad i Carl Larssons ateljé på Glasbruksgatan på Södermalm.
