Denna målning, med sina djurskelett och dödskallar, blandade med levande djur och insekter skulle kunna tolkas en påminnelse om alltings ändlighet. Titeln antyder detta – kom ihåg att du är dödlig. Sådan symbolik var vanlig och skulle mana till eftertanke och varna för syndfullt leverne. Konstnären Savery hade en tid varit hovmålare hos kejsar Rudolf II i Prag. Målningen kom troligen till vid kejsarens hov där intresset för natur och zoologi var stort.
