Een dode patrijs is met een touwtje aan zijn klauw opgehangen aan een spijker. Hij hangt voor een wit gepleisterde muur in helder zonlicht. Het schilderij is zó geschilderd dat het net echt lijkt, ondanks het spaarzame kleurgebruik. Dit soort bedriegertjes of trompe-l’oeils waren halverwege de 17de eeuw erg in trek. Deze is van Weenix, die vooral bekend is om zijn indrukwekkende Italiaanse landschappen.
