Dit is Jacob Trip, 84 jaar oud. Hij is de stamvader van een van de belangrijkste handelsfamilies van Holland. Extreem rijk geworden in de internationale wapenhandel, straalt de oude Trip veel macht uit – ondanks zijn hoge leeftijd. Trip woonde in Dordrecht waar hij Nicolaes Maes opdracht gaf voor dit portret. Maes was een Dordtenaar, maar woonde enige jaren in Amsterdam, waar hij in de leer ging bij Rembrandt. Ook Rembrandt portretteerde de oude Trip en diens vrouw Marghareta de Geer.
