Een officier en een jongedame zitten aan tafel en spelen triktrak. Op het moment dat zij de dobbelstenen wil werpen, verschijnt een boodschapper met een brief in de hand. Is het goed nieuws dat hij brengt? De bezorgde blik van de officier doet het ergste vermoeden. Verkolje was een meester in de weergave van glimmend satijn. De rug van de prachtige jurk, vol plooitjes, naadjes en kreukels, is daar een goed voorbeeld van.
