De Duitser Lingelbach verhuisde al jong met zijn familie naar Amsterdam, maar woonde ook enkele jaren in Rome. Dit schilderij maakte hij zo’n 20 jaar later, weer thuis in Amsterdam. Het is een gefantaseerde voorstelling van een zuidelijke haven met exotische figuren, een kameel en klassieke architectuur. Lingelbach was lange tijd populair onder verzamelaars. In de 18de eeuw kocht stadhouder prins Willem V van Oranje dit doek voor zijn schilderijengalerij.
