Adriaen Brouwer was afkomstig uit Vlaanderen en woonde een paar jaar in de Noordelijke Nederlanden. Daar introduceerde hij het genre van schilderijen met boertige types. Zijn karikaturale boeren, met hun lompe manier van doen, vielen in de smaak bij de rijke Hollandse burgers. In deze herberg is niemand meer bij zinnen, dankzij drank, tabak en opwinding. De vrouw op de voorgrond is er het ergst aan toe en is slapend van haar kruk gerold.
