Ter Borchs oeuvre bestaat voor een groot deel uit intieme voorstellingen van mensen, die opgaan in hun bezigheden. Deze briefschrijfster is de eerste van een hele reeks en was een voorbeeld voor andere schilders, zoals Vermeer. De vrouw zit aan tafel en heeft het kostbare oosterse tapijt opzij geschoven. Naast haar staat een zacht glanzend, tinnen inktstel. De handeling in de voorstelling is minimaal – wat de vrouw denkt en schrijft mogen we zelf invullen.
