Ontspannen leunt deze jonge man met zijn hand in de zij op een balustrade. Hij is gekleed volgens de mode van zijn tijd: met lang haar, een openvallende boord – zonder kraag! – en ruimvallende manchetten. Waarschijnlijk is dit een portret van Louis Trip junior. Hij was een telg uit de Amsterdamse tak van de familie Trip, een van de belangrijkste handelsfamilies in Holland. Ferdinand Bol was een leerling van Rembrandt. Beiden portretteerden meerdere leden van de familie Trip.
